Why Is Wi-Fi So Slow in My NYC Apartment? 7 Real Causes and Fixes
Wi-Fi is slow in most NYC apartments because the walls block the signal, not because the internet plan is slow. Pre-war plaster hides a metal mesh that acts like a cage. Post-war concrete cuts a 5 GHz WiFi signal by 15 to 25 dB, which is more than 95 percent of the signal strength. Modern buildings have their own problems: metal studs, glass, and marble. Add a router stuck in a corner, dozens of neighbors on the same channels, and too many devices, and a 1 gig plan feels like 50 megabits.

This is the most common complaint we hear from New York City homeowners, and it is almost never the internet service provider's fault. Here are the real reasons your slow Wi-Fi connection happens, and what actually fixes each one.

Why Is My WiFi So Slow in My Apartment When My Internet Plan Is Fast?
Your WiFi is slow because the WiFi signal loses strength between the router and your device, and the plan speed only counts at the router. A speed test next to the router measures your internet service. The same test in the back bedroom measures your Wi-Fi network. In NYC apartments those two numbers are often 10 times apart.
Wi-Fi is a radio. Radios lose power through obstacles, floors, metal, and distance. Your internet provider's router is built to reach a suburban living room, not a 2,000 square foot pre-war apartment with eight plaster walls between the kitchen and the office, or a new glass tower apartment with metal studs, marble baths, and 40 neighbors on the same channels.
Cause 1: Thick Walls Create a Dead Zone (Plaster With Metal Lath and Concrete)
Thick NYC walls are the number one cause of slow Wi-Fi in an apartment building. Buildings from before 1950 used plaster spread over metal lath, a wire mesh. That mesh works like a Faraday cage and blocks radio signals (Resolution Wireless, 2026). Post-war buildings use poured concrete or block partitions, which cut a 5 GHz wifi signal by 15 to 25 dB per wall (WiFi Weave). Every 3 dB lost is half the signal power. Modern apartments are not off the hook. Metal studs, floor-to-ceiling glass, marble, and tile all cut the signal, and new towers pack more neighbors onto the same channels. We see poor Wi-Fi in brand new buildings every week.

Fix: stop trying to push one signal through every wall. Put a small access point where it matters and connect each one with an ethernet cable for a stable connection. This is how hotels and offices do it, and it works in a pre-war six-room apartment and a modern glass tower alike.
Cause 2: Bad Wi-Fi Starts With Router Placement (Move Your Router)
A wifi router in a closet, behind the TV, or in a far corner starts the wifi signal in the worst possible spot. Wi-Fi spreads out in all directions, so a router at one end of the apartment wastes half its signal on your neighbor. Bad Wi-Fi often starts here.

Move your router - Put it in a more central location, in an elevated location, out in the open. Not in the cabinet where the cable comes in.
Get it off the floor - Large furniture, radiators, and metal shelving all soak up signal. Point the antennas up if it has them.
Check signal strength in each area - Use the same speed test in the same minute. Write the numbers down. This is your dead zone map.
Reboot once and update the firmware - Check the router's settings page for a firmware update. If a reboot fixes it, the router is overheating or overloaded. That is a hardware problem.
Cause 3: Network Congestion From Neighbors in Your Apartment Complex
In an apartment complex, dozens of routers share the same few radio channels. That is network congestion and signal interference, and it is worst at night when everyone streams. Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors add interference on 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has only three channels that do not overlap. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands have far more room, but they do not travel through walls as well.
Fix: a modern wifi router picks a different channel on its own when the current one is crowded. Turn on the 5 GHz band for phones and laptops, and keep 2.4 GHz for the smart plugs and older devices that need range more than speed.

The router your internet provider ships is built to a low price. It has a weak radio, a small processor, and one location. It is fine for a studio. It is not fine for a family apartment with two TVs, three laptops, a Sonos system, and a video doorbell all fighting for bandwidth.

Cause 5: Too Many Devices on One Network
A modern apartment has 30 to 60 connected devices. TVs, phones, laptops, speakers, cameras, thermostats, and smart plugs all talk at once. A cheap router handles a handful well and the rest badly. Video calls stutter first because they need a steady connection, not just a fast one.
Fix: put the heavy hitters on ethernet. TVs, gaming consoles, and the home office desk should have a wired ethernet connection. Cause 6: A WiFi Extender Made It Worse (Mesh System vs. Range Extender)
A plug-in wifi extender, also called a range extender or repeater, rebroadcasts a weak wifi signal, so it cuts your wi fi speed in half and adds a second network name. It is the most common "fix" we remove. A mesh system is better because the units talk to each other on a dedicated band. A wired access point is best because it never has to relay anything.

If your wifi extender sits in the dead zone, it is repeating a bad signal. Range extenders only help when placed halfway between the router and the problem area, with strong signal strength at that spot.
Cause 7: Your Apartment Layout Creates Dead Zones Only an Ethernet Connection Fixes
Long railroad layouts, L-shaped apartments, and duplexes create dead zones no single wifi router can reach. The Wi-Fi connection has to turn corners and pass through kitchens full of metal. The fix is the same one every hotel uses: two or three small ceiling or wall access points, each wired back to a hidden switch.
